After the federal government had arranged a treaty with the Cherokee to expel them from the area and end their land claims, Jackson County was created on December 13, 1819. The area was not suitable for plantation-style agriculture in the lowlands or coastal areas due to its hilly and mountainous terrain. It was settled by a large number of families from Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia.
The area was primarily used for subsistence farming and very few families owned slaves. Bellefonte, Alabama was the county seat at the time and had 181 residents. Eight of these were free blacks, while the rest were white. In that community, no slaves were ever recorded.
There are many rivers and waterways that cross the county. The Tennessee River is the largest, draining most of the county. Scottsboro is the county seat. It was built along the river. This area also served as a station for railroads when they arrived in the region. In the first quarter century of the 20th Century, hydroelectric power was created to produce energy for industry.
