Grove Hill was once home to Creek and Choctaw Natives. In 1832, the Clarke County county seat was established at Grove Hill. This was because it was the most central point to the rest. The area was known as Smithville, Macon, and then Grove Hill. It was named Grove Hill in 1850 because of the large oak tree grove on the plateau. In 1929, the town was chartered and officially incorporated. The town was almost destroyed by a yellow fever epidemic that struck in 1853.
