About Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia County was primarily comprised of the area west of the Delaware River, between the Schuylkill River south and the border with Bucks County north. The western boundary was not defined. Philadelphia County would form Berks County in 1752 and Montgomery County in 1784. These separations and other border changes led to the creation of the current boundaries.

According to Penn's plans, the City of Philadelphia consisted of only the area between South and Vine Streets, and the Delaware River and Schuylkill Rivers. Others settlements were established beyond the city's boundaries, and they eventually became independent and had their own governments.
