Colorado's history is intertwined with the history of Arapahoe County. Named after the Arapaho Indians and the Cheyenne Indians who occupied large swathes of Colorado's territory, the County was founded. Arapahoe County originally belonged to the Territory of Kansas. In 1861 Kansas became a state. Colorado became a territory with Arapahoe County being one of 17 counties that stretched east to the Kansas border. Denver was the original County Seat until 1902 when Arapahoe County became five counties. The new County seat was created by the City of Littleton, which remains so today.
