About the Oregon Legal System

Oregon has one federal court, one state supreme court, and a court for criminal appeals. There are also trial courts with general and limited jurisdiction.

Nonpartisan elections are the only way to select state court judges for Oregon. If they want to continue on the court, judges must run for reelection at the conclusion of their terms.

The United States District Court for the District of Oregon is the federal district court for Oregon. Appeals can be made to the U.S. Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit.

The Oregon Supreme Court was established in 1859 and currently has seven judgeships. All seven judges of the court were appointed by a Democratic governor as of January 2022.

The Oregon Court of Appeals serves as the intermediate appellate court. This court can hear all civil and criminal appeals from circuit courts. It also has the authority to review certain state administrative agency actions. The court is not authorized to hear cases involving the death penalty, which are reserved for the Oregon Supreme Court. Tax court appeals are reserved for Oregon Tax Court.

The Oregon Circuit Courts are general courts with general jurisdiction. Each county in Oregon has a circuit court. There are 27 judicial districts with 137 judges.

About Oregon

Spanish origins are the earliest evidence that Oregon was named. Rodrigo Montezuma of New Spain wrote the historical chronicle Relacion y Baja California. It refers to the Columbia River at the time that the Spanish explorers entered the North American territory, which became part of the Viceroyalty in New Spain. This chronicle is the first to provide topographical and linguistic information about Oregon. Two other Spanish-derived sources exist, including the term oregano which refers to a plant found in the southern region. The Spaniards may have named the American territory since there is an American stream called the "Arroyo del Oregon" in Spain. It is also possible that "El Orejon", the Spanish phrase for "El Orejon", was later changed to a "g". This could refer to the "earful" of the huge Columbia River at its mouth.
