More about Fairfield, California

According to the City of Fairfield website, Native Americans settled in Rockville and Green Valley according to the Ion culture. The oldest Native American settlement in Northern California is Fairfield, according to artifacts found by some of Fairfield's earliest inhabitants. They are estimated to be between five and six thousand years old.

In 1810, the Spanish army attacked the Suisun Indians and made the first contact with Europe. The Mexican General Vallejo won the victory over Indian Chief Sem Yeto in 1835. He later became an ally of the chief in conflicts with other tribes. The Rancho Suisun Mexican land grant was given to Indian Chief Solano in 1837. Robert H. Waterman, a Connecticut clipper ship captain, eventually received the grant. In 1856, he not only gave the town its name but also entered Fairfield in the race to become Solano County's seat in 1858. He won it from Benicia. He also gave 16 acres of land as an inducement for the construction of county buildings. Fairfield was established as a city in 1903.

Fairfield was evacuated by the Hennessey Fire in August 2020. It resulted from the burning of more than 315,000 acres in five counties including Vacaville.
