About Multnomah County, Oregon

Multnomah County was formed from two Oregon counties, the eastern portion of Washington County and the northern section of Clackamas County on December 22, 1854. The petition was filed by Portland businessmen earlier in the year, complaining about the inconvenient Hillsboro location of Washington County's seat and the loss of tax revenue from Portland to support Washington County farmers. The first meeting of county commissioners took place on January 17, 1855.

Named after the Chinookan word meaning "lower river", Multnomah and Matlnomaq respectively, the county was named in English. Ne-matlnomaq in Chinook Jargon means "place of matlnomaq", or "the lower river" from the Oregon City Falls to the Columbia River. Alternatively, Chinookan malnumax 'those toward the water. William Clark, the explorer wrote in his Journal that he entered this river...called Multnomah...from an indigenous nation on Wappato Island. This is a bit below the entrance. Clark may have misunderstood the meaning of Multnomah when he refers to the Willamette River. Simply put, Multnomah is the shortened form of nematlnomaq/nimalnumax".
