For nearly 100 years Pittsburg has been a place of progress. Pittsburg, located at the junction of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, is a city that has both promise and progress. Our town's first recorded history begins in 1839 when Jose Antone Mesa and Miguel Jose Garcia were granted nearly 10,000 acres by the Mexican government. The little town was renamed New York of the Pacific shortly afterward, possibly due to colonel J.D. who built it. Stevenson was born in New York. The area was soon known as New York Landing. It thrived in the canning and fishing industries. The discovery of coal three miles to the south of the town led to the renaming of the town Black Diamond in 1868.
