The Board of County Commissioners is the executive and legislative body in Passaic County's Commission form of government. The three-year term of seven Commissioners is staggered and at large. At the January annual reorganization meeting, a Director and a deputy director are elected from among seven Commissioners. Passaic County is run by six standing committees of its Board of County Commissioners. These are Administration & Finance, Health, Education and Community Affairs, Public Works and Buildings & Grounds, Law & Public Safety, Human Services, and Planning and Economic Development. For the efficient administration of county government, the commissioners appoint people to various departments, agencies, boards, or commissions. The 2016 salary for commissioners was $28,500, while the annual salary for directors was $29,500.
