About Essex County, New Jersey

This region was the first to lead the state's rebuilding and rehabilitation of its housing stock. It began around the turn of this century. Newark was the leader in the issuance of building permits in New Jersey during the 2000s. There were many reasons, including citywide incentives to encourage building development, an improving economy, and the growing demand for low-cost housing close to Manhattan. Newark, which has seen a rise in median income and a drop in poverty rates, is now one of the fastest-growing cities in the Northeast. This is a significant turnaround from the devastation and abandonment that occurred in the 1970s, 1980s, and early part of the 1990s.

This area of the county was historically a high-crime region in the country and state. However, it has seen significant declines in recent years, much like its neighbor to the east, New York City. Newark's crime rate had dropped 60% in the past decade, to its lowest level in 40 years. East Orange, a neighboring city, has also seen a drop in crime. It dropped 50% between 2005 and 2007. Although crime rates in these cities have declined in recent years, they remain high compared to Orange, Irvington, and national statistics. Newark saw 67 homicides in 2008, compared to 105 in 2007. The record for murders was set in 1981 with 161 deaths.
