Escondido was originally an agricultural community that grew muscat grapes. In 1894-1895, a dam was constructed to create Lake Wohlford. Orange and lemon trees, along with olive and walnut trees, were planted in large numbers. Avocados were the most popular local crop by the 1960s. However, Escondido still maintains a significant agricultural presence within the San Pascual Valley, including vineyards and citrus orchards.
