About Waterloo, Iowa

Waterloo, Iowa is the county seat and largest city of Black Hawk County. Situated along the banks of the Cedar River, it borders several other communities such as Cedar Falls, Evansdale, and Hudson. Waterloo is approximately 90 miles northeast of Des Moines and easily reached via Interstate 380.

Waterloo is home to the John Deere Tractor & Engine Museum, which honors the company's history and contributions to agriculture. Exhibits showcase historic tractors, engines and other machinery from throughout Waterloo. Furthermore, Waterloo boasts an exciting arts community with numerous galleries, theaters and performance spaces scattered around town.

Waterloo has had many notable residents throughout its history. Lou Henry Hoover, wife of President Herbert Hoover and native daughter, were two notable residents who attended high school there; Kurt Angle also attended and graduated from Waterloo's high school; actress Tricia Helfer also hails from there. Waterloo has witnessed many landmark events throughout its history, such as the Waterloo Riot of 1884 - which began as a labor dispute but quickly escalated into violent confrontation between striking workers and the National Guard. Unfortunately, several people died and many more were injured in this one of Iowa's largest labor-related incidents. Furthermore, Waterloo has hosted several major sporting events over time such as Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament and National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum.
