About the Iowa Legal System

There are two federal courts in Iowa: a state supreme and a state court. Trial courts have both limited and general jurisdiction. They serve different purposes.

The Iowa Supreme Court was established in 1846 and has seven judgeships. An initial term of one year is served by a justice upon their appointment to the court. The term ends on January 1, after the next judicial retain election or the expiration. The regular term of office for retained justices is eight years. 72 is the mandatory retirement age. If the court gives them the position, a retired justice can serve as a senior Judge. The chief justice is elected by the justices for a term that corresponds to the term of office of the elected judges.

The Iowa Court of Appeals is made up of nine judges and serves as the intermediate appellate court. This court reviews appeals from trial courts throughout the state and hears cases that have been assigned to it by Iowa Supreme Court. The Iowa Court of Appeals hears most appeals in Iowa. Its decisions are final unless the Iowa Supreme Court grants further review.

The Iowa District Courts are the trial courts of Iowa. Each of Iowa's 99 counties has a district court. Eight judicial districts are formed from the counties. The Iowa Supreme Court selects a chief judge for each district. The Iowa Supreme Court selects chief judges for each district. They have general jurisdiction over all civil, criminal, and juvenile matters. Associate and magistrate judges are limited in their jurisdiction.

About Iowa

More than 13,000 years ago, the first American Indians arrived in Iowa. They were hunters and gatherers who lived in a Pleistocene glacial environment. American Indians had settled large swathes of Iowa by the time European traders and explorers arrived. They have developed complex political, economic, and social systems. This gradual transformation occurred. The Archaic period saw American Indians adapt to their local environment and ecosystems. As populations increased, they became more sedentary.

American Indians began using domesticated plants more than 3,000 years ago during the Late Archaic period. The Woodland period was characterized by increased dependence on agriculture and increased social complexity. There was increased use of mounds and ceramics as well as specialized subsistence. The Late Prehistoric period saw increased maize use and social changes that led to social flourishing, and nucleated settlements.
