The city lies along the Mississippi River which acts as a natural border between Illinois and Iowa. Rock Island was once a major hub for the railroad industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Many major railroads were located in the city, including the Rock Island Railroad and Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad.
