Oakland County was originally split into 25 townships. These are listed below. Each township measures six miles by six miles for a total area of 36 square miles. This design was based on the Land Ordinance of 1785, and the Northwest Ordinance of 17.87. Oakland County is an excellent example of the land policy that was established. All townships are equally sized. Section 16 was a section that was designated for funding and maintaining public education in each township. Many schools in Oakland County townships can be found within this section.
The city of Detroit lies in Wayne County. It borders Oakland County to its south. The boundary between these counties is 8 Mile Road. It's also called "Baseline Road" in certain areas. It was originally used in the original survey of Michigan and serves as the northern/southern boundary for all counties, from Lake St. Clair up to Lake Michigan. This divide, which was established in the 1950s to serve as a racial dividing boundary between the predominantly black city and the almost entirely white suburbs, became historical.
