I retained the Houser Firm to represent me in my divorce from my wife. I felt that my case was fairly basic considering my Wife and I are only contesting one asset. I expressed constantly that we must keep expenses down regarding the use of my retainer. I was never notified prior to any action that was going to eat up a large portion of my retainer. I was notified one day prior to the Mandatory Disclosure submittal deadline that they blew through my second retainer payment of $3500.00 and would need another $3500.00 immediately to continue work on my case. I can't speak on how good or bad of a lawyer Ms. Houser is because we never made it to a point of real negotiation with my wife's lawyer. A lawyer should be able to give you an idea of the cost to get to specific waypoints in your case. You should ask them how much will it cost to get to Mandatory Disclosure? What can I do to keep costs down? They should notify you prior to performing a task that is going to use a large portion of your retainer. Once a Lawyer gets your retainer, their goal is to ethically and effectively bill you enough hours to keep as much of the retainer as possible. Just keep that in mind.
