More about Visalia, California

Tulare County was not established when California became a state in 1850. Tulare County, which is now California, was once part of the large County of Mariposa. Some pioneers arrived in the area, which was then known as Four Creeks, in 1852. Named after the numerous watershed creeks and rivers that flow from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the area is now known as Four Creeks. The result was a vast swampy area with an impressive oak forest. Tulare County was established by a group of hardworking settlers who petitioned the state legislature to be granted county status.

Nathaniel Vise was one of the first to live in a fort that was built by the settlers. He was also responsible for surveying the new settlement. He wrote in November 1852 that the town had 60-80 residents, of which 30 are school-age children. The county seat of Tulare is situated in the town, which is situated upon one of the subdivisions that flow into the Kaweah River. This prediction was realized in 1853 and Visalia has been the county seat ever since. Visalia is named after Nathaniel Vise, who was born in Visalia, Kentucky.
