The Food and Drug Administration has just issued a health advisory in response to reports of deadly brain infections in people who use the psoriasis drug Raptiva. There have been three confirmed cases and one possible case of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) in people taking Raptiva. Of those four people, three are now dead. All patients has been treated with Raptiva for at least three years.
Enbrel Linked to Deadly Infections, Cancer in Children
The arthritis and skin disorder drug Enbrel has caused deadly infections and in some cases cancers in children who use the drug, federal regulators said. Enbrel’s maker, Amgen Inc., wants the drug approved for use in children suffering from psoriasis, a painful disease that causes red scales to grow on the skin. FDA Investigating Arthritis Drugs’ Possible Link to Cancer in Children
The Food and Drug Administration is looking into whether four drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and other immune system diseases might increase the risk of cancer in children. One of the drugs being investigated is Remicade, which treats Crohn’s disease (inflammation of the bowel) in children. Remicade is made by Johnson & Johnson and is sold in Europe by Schering-Plough.
