CPSC Intervenes in phil&teds Feeding Chair Recall

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning that thousands of tabletop feeding chairs for babies may not be safe, after numerous reports of injuries. The CPSC said that Colorado-based phil&teds USA Inc. refused to consent to a nationwide recall that was acceptable to the agency. The CPSC is also investigating phil&teds clip-on chairs with plastic spacers between the clamps and bar.

Children could be hurt in certain versions of the “metoo” clip-on tabletop chairs imported by phil&teds. The chairs have metal clamps that attach to most table tops, including restaurant tables. According to the CPSC, those clamps can easily come loose, causing the chair to detach and causing a child to fall to the floor.

Fingers or hands can also be pinched or crushed when the chairs partially detach from a table, catching a child’s fingers or hands between the clamp and a metal bar on the front of the chair.

On its website, the company is offering rubberized grips to cover the chair’s clamps. The CPSC says that the tables can still fall off with the grips, and adds that phil&teds is not providing a replacement kit in conjunction with the CPSC, as it falsely advertised on the website.
