Children’s Sweatshirts & Jackets Recalled Over Strangulation Hazards
Thousands of children’s sweatshirts and jackets have been recalled because the garments have drawstrings around the neck or waist, which violate federal laws and pose risks of strangulation and suffocation to kids.
About 210,000 children’s jackets from GTM Sportswear and another 7,200 children’s hooded pullover sweatshirts from New Mode Sportswear are included in the separate product recalls issued today by the companies and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Since February 1996, federal product safety guidelines have prohibited children’s outerwear from having drawstrings which can become tangled around the neck or waist of young children, causing deadly and serious injuries.
GTM Jacket Recall
The GTM sportswear children’s jackets have drawstrings through the hood which can pose a strangulation hazard to children, the CPSC said. No injuries have been reported.
Children’s hooded nylon jackets in sizes XXS-XL (2T-16) and in various colors are included in the recall. “GTM Sportswear” is printed on a label sewn in the neck of the garments. Styles include Youth Medalist Jacket (YJA180), Youth Legacy Jacket (YJAPT01), Youth Eclipse Jacket (YLJA186), Youth Dominator Jacket (YJA3800), Youth Booster Jacket (YJA150), Youth Achiever Jacket (YJA161), the CPSC said.
The recalled jackets were sold at GTM Sportswear, K-State Super Store, and Cats Closet stores in Kansas, in other customer screen print and embroidery stores nationwide, over the Internet at www.gtmsportswear.com, www.kstategear.com, www.catscloset.com and www.justforkix.com, and in GTM Sportswear and the Just for Kix catalogs from January 2003 through December 2009 for between $25 and $30, the CPSC said. The clothing was manufactured in China.
Consumers should immediately remove the drawstrings from the jackets to eliminate the hazard or return the jackets to their place of purchase or to GTM Sportswear for a full refund.
Hooded Sweatshirt Recall
The recalled hooded pullover sweatshirts were made by New Mode Sportswear, of Garden Grove, Ca.
Included in the recall are children’s hooded pullover and zip hooded sweatshirts in sizes S-XL. They were sold in black, navy blue and heather gray. Brand name 21 Pro USA Sportswear and RN#92952 are printed on a label sewn into the neck of the sweatshirts.
The recalled garments were made in China and sold at various T-shirt outlets and swap meets on the West Coast from January 2006 through July 2006 for about $6, the CPSC said.
