More Strollers Recalled Due to Fingertip Amputation Risks
About 1,200 CYBEX strollers sold in the U.S. and Canada are being recalled so repairs can be made following a report of a child having his fingertip fractured and nearly cut off in a hinge on the child carriers.
The recall by Regal Lager Inc. of Kennesaw, Ga. comes just one week after 1.5 million Graco strollers and one year after about one million Maclaren strollers were recalled after reports of children having their fingertips snipped off or cut by the hinges on the strollers.
The stroller recalls are occurring because hinge mechanisms on the sides of the child carriers pose risks of fingertip amputation and lacerations to children when the strollers are being opened and unfolded. So far, Regal Lager has received one report of a child placing his finger in the stroller’s hinge mechanism, resulting in a finger fracture.
Earlier Stroller Recalls
In last month’s Graco stroller recall, there were seven reports of children putting their fingers in the stroller’s canopy hinge while the canopy was being opened or closed. Included in those reports were five fingertip amputations and two lacerations to fingertips, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
In the Maclaren stroller recall, there were at least 15 reports of children placing their fingers in the hinge mechanism on the strollers. In 12 of those cases, the child’s fingertip was amputated by the pinching action of the opening hinge, product safety officials said.
Several Stroller Models Included in Recall
The latest stroller recall involves Ruby, Onyx, and Topaz models of CYBEX umbrella strollers. “CYBEX” is printed on the side of the strollers, the CPSC said. About 1,100 of the strollers were sold in the United States and 90 were sold in Canada.
The recalled strollers were manufactured in China and sold at department and juvenile product stores nationwide between August 2009 and November 2009 for between $140 and $260.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and contact Regal Lager to receive a free hinge cover retrofit kit, the CPSC said.
