FDA Issues Baby Food Bacterial Contamination Warning

Selected varieties of HAPPYBABY and HAPPYTOT brand baby foods are being recalled because pouches of the products may contain bacteria that can cause serious illness or death to newborns, the Food and Drug Administration said.

Nine flavors of Stage 1 and Stage 2 baby foods in pouches from Nurture Inc. are involved in the recall, which was announced because some pouches are swollen or leaking. The damage to the pouches may mean the baby food inside is contaminated with bacteria or that the packaging has been compromised and is susceptible to bacterial contamination, the FDA recall notice said.

So far, there have been no reports of babies becoming ill from tainted HAPPYBABY or HAPPYTOT foods, officials said.

A complaint about a swollen baby food pouch received from a consumer in New York launched the FDA investigation, which detected more pouches that were swollen or leaking. The FDA is now testing those pouches to determine if they are tainted by bacteria.
