Dorel Play Yards Recalled Due to Suffocation Hazard
Over the holiday break, many consumers may have missed the news of an important product recall involving thousands of Dorel Juvenile play yards with bassinets, which may pose a suffocation risk to young children.
Dorel Juvenile Group Inc. of Columbus, Ind. and the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on Dec. 30. The recall involves about 213,000 Safety 1st Disney Care Center Play Yard and Eddie Bauer Complete Care Play Yards.
Metal bars which support the floorboard of the bassinet attachments can come out of the fabric sleeves and create an uneven sleeping surface, posing a risk of suffocation or positional asphyxiation, the CPSC recall notice said.
While no injuries or suffocation incidents have been reported associated with the recalled Dorel play yards with bassinets, the recall was announced in an effort to reduce the risk of such devastating injuries.
Children Injured by Defective Cribs, Play Yards
Each year across the United States, thousands of children are injured or killed in defectively dangerous cribs, portable play yards, bassinets, and similar children’s products. Suffocation, strangulation, and entrapment injuries caused by loose or broken parts and broken bones suffered from falls from high chairs are among the types of injuries most commonly seen in accidents involving defective children’s products.
Specific Models Recalled
The recalled portable play yards were sold with a bassinet attachment and a built-in changing station. The following model numbers are included in the recall: 05025, 05026, 05037, 05088, and 05350. The model number can be found printed on a sticker on one of the support legs underneath the play yard. The brand names “Safety 1st” or “Eddie Bauer” are printed near the bottom of the fabric sides of the play yards.
The products were sold at major retailers including Babies “R” Us, Kmart, Sears, Target, and Wal-Mart from January 2007 through October 2009 for between $100 and $130. They were manufactured in China.
Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the bassinet attachment that is part of the recalled play yards and contact Dorel Juvenile Group for a free repair kit including replacement bassinet fabric, bassinet bars and installation instructions, the CPSC said.
