Choking Hazard Prompts Recall of Children’s Santa Suits

Christmas has come and gone, but thousands of boys’ Santa Claus costumes are being recalled today because buttons on the little red suits can fall off and pose a choking hazard to children.

Nearly 10,000 First Impressions Boys’ Three-Piece Santa sets are involved in the voluntary nationwide recall announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The suits were imported by Macy’s Merchandising Group, Inc. of New York, N.Y.

The recall was announced because loose buttons on the suit’s jacket may easily detach, posing a choking hazard to young children. However, no incidents of the buttons coming loose and no injuries to children have been reported, the CPSC said.

The recall involves boy’s three-piece Santa Sets in sizes 0-24 months. The suits included a jacket, pants, and hat and were sold at Macy’s stores nationwide and in Puerto Rico with the following UPC codes: 0689439416622, 0689439417131, 0689439417148, 0689439417155, 0689439417162, and 0689439417179.

The recalled suits also were sold at Navy Exchange stores under the following UPC codes: 0706254537346, 0706254537353, 0706254537360, 0706254537377, 0706254537384, and 0706254537391.

All the recalled products have the following tracking label information sewn into the side seam of the top and bottom: Style 9131, Supplier 22155, Mfg 34837, Aug. 2009, Macy’s Inc.

The defective Santa suits were sold in Macy’s stores and on macys.com from September to December 2009 and at U.S. Navy Exchange stores from November through December 2009 for about $20 to $40. They were manufactured in China, the CPSC said.

Consumers are advised to immediately remove the buttons from the jacket to eliminate the hazard or return the garment to any Macy’s or U.S. Navy Exchange store for a full refund.
