Another 1 Million Toyotas Added to Growing Recall

The recall of Toyota-made cars and trucks over concerns about faulty gas pedals that may stick and cause the vehicles to suddenly speed out of control continues to grow.

Toyota Motor Corp. said today it will recall more than 1 million more vehicles in the United States for the same problems. The announcement comes just weeks after the car maker announced two separate recalls involving a total of 6.5 million vehicles for the same gas pedal problems.

Also this week, Toyota said the problems with faulty gas pedals had led the company to take the unprecedented step of halting production and sales of the recalled vehicles.

Some Toyota and Lexus drivers have said the gas pedals stuck in the open position, causing them to lose control. In one case, an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer and three members of his family were killed on a freeway near San Diego when their Lexus sedan sped out of control. Investigators later determined the vehicle’s gas pedal had become pinned to the floor beneath ill-fitting floor mats, causing the fiery wreck.

More Models Added to Growing Recall

The latest recall affects five Toyota vehicle models, including:

2008-2010 Highlander

2009-2010 Corolla

2009-2010 Venza

2009-2010 Matrix

2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe

Company Offering to Fix Faulty Accelerators

Toyota spokesman Hideaki Homma said Toyota decided to recall more vehicles due to the risk of accelerator pedals becoming stuck in the mats, according to an Associated Press report.

The car maker said in a statement it will fix or replace the accelerator pedals in the recalled vehicles in an effort to prevent future problems with floor mat entrapment. The company also plans to replace floor mats for the latest batch of recalled vehicles, the company said.
