1.5 Million Graco Strollers Recalled Due to Fingertip Amputation, Laceration Hazards

About 1.5 million Graco strollers have been recalled after reports of children having their fingertips amputated or cut by the hinges on the canopy of the strollers.

Graco Children’s Products Inc., of Atlanta, Ga., said it has received seven reports of children putting their fingers in the stroller’s canopy hinge while the canopy was being opened or closed. Included in those reports are five fingertip amputations and two lacerations (cuts) to fingertips, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Last year, about one million Maclaren strollers were recalled due to the risks of the same type of injury. The company said at the time of the recall that it had received 15 reports of children placing their fingers in the hinge mechanism on the strollers. In 12 of those cases, the child’s fingertip was amputated by the pinching action of the opening hinge, product safety officials said.

Defectively dangerous strollers, cribs, portable play yards, and other children’s products are responsible for causing hundreds of deaths and injuries to children in the United States each year.

Dozens of Graco Stroller Models Recalled

The voluntary, nationwide recall involves more than 60 models of Graco Passage, Alano, and Spree Strollers and Travel Systems. For a complete listing of the recalled model numbers and photos of the strollers and the hinges, see the CPSC’s recall notice. The model number and manufacture date are located on the lower inside portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels, the CPSC said.

Only strollers or travel systems with a plastic, jointed hinge mechanism that has indented canopy positioning notches are included in the recall. Other Graco strollers are not being recalled.

Recalled Strollers Sold at Major Retailers

The recalled strollers were manufactured between October 2004 and February 2008 and sold at AAFES, Burlington Coat Factory, Babies “R” Us, Toys “R” Us, Kmart, Fred Meyer, Meijers, Navy Exchange, Sears, Target, Walmart and other retailers nationwide from October 2004 and December 2009 for between $80 and $90 for the strollers and between $150 and $200 for the travel systems. They were made in China.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and contact Graco to receive a free protective cover repair kit.
