Volvo Recalls 136,100 Vehicles Due to Fuel Leaks, Potential Fires
More than 136,000 Volvo vehicles from various models and model years are being recalled today because of concerns that cracks may develop in the fuel system, causing fires.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the “fuel pump can develop cracks in the fuel pump flange when exposed to certain environmental conditions (hot climate and temperature cycling) over time and in combination with varying fuel quality.”
Owners of defective vehicles that develop fuel-system cracks may notice fuel leaks or smell leaking fuel, which if exposed to an ignition source could result in a fire, the NHTSA said.
The following model years and Volvo vehicles are being recalled:
• 2001-2004 model-year S60
• 2002-2005 model-year S80
• 2001-2004 model-year V70
• 2001-2004 model-year XC70
• 2003-2005 model-year XC90
The recalled vehicles were sold or are registered in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and the U.S. territories, the NHTSA said.
Volvo dealers will inspect the fuel pump on the recalled vehicles and replace defective parts for free with a new, modified part, officials said. Owners of recalled vehicles should receive a formal recall bulletin in the mail beginning in January, the NHTSA said. Vehicle owners with questions may contact Volvo at 866-637-3774 or the NHTSA at 888-327-4236.
