CPSC Recalls

Utility Knives Recalled After Report of Laceration Injury

About 204,000 tool bench utility knives sold at Dollar Tree and related discount stores are being recalled because the knife’s blade can slide past the support during use, posing a risk of laceration injuries to consumers.

Dollar Tree Stores Inc. of Chesapeake, Va. said it has received one report of a user suffering a laceration from the recalled utility knife, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. A nationwide, voluntary recall of the products has been announced.

Defectively dangerous household tools and appliances are a leading cause of injury in American homes. Tools such as utility knives which do not work as designed can result in serious injuries to users.

The recalled utility knives are black or gray and measure about six inches long and 1.25 inches wide. “Tool Bench Utility Knife” is printed on the front of the packages, which also contain an extra replacement blade. Also,

The utility knives being recalled also have “975942,” date code “93,” and “UPC 39277759429” printed on the back of the packaging, the CPSC said. They were made in China and sold at Dollar Tree, Dollar Bill$, and Deal$ stores across the United States from April 2009 and October 2009 for about $1.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled utility knife and return it to the store where purchased for a full refund, the CPSC said.
