Two More Young Residents of The Acreage Have Brain Tumors
The number of children who lived in a Florida housing development called The Acreage and have been diagnosed with brain tumors has grown.
According to a UPI news report, two more children who have lived in the area of Palm Beach County have brain tumors, bringing the total to 15 so far. The UPI report confirming the two new cases cites family members of the newly diagnosed kids.
Children who either still do or used to live in the neighborhood have been diagnosed with brain cancers in the last few weeks. Perhaps scariest of all, state health officials don’t know what is causing the apparent cancer cluster.
Possible Ground Water Contamination
There are about 45,000 residents of The Acreage, so the number of brain cancers being reported there is alarmingly high, state officials admit. The early focus of the investigation has centered on possible environmental pollution in the area’s well water.
However, tests of about 50 water wells in the area have not turned up signs of contamination above state limits, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Work is continuing in an effort to identify the source of the tumors, officials said.
Toxic Exposure Risk
It’s not unusual for pesticides, fertilizes, and other agricultural products or harmful chemicals to seep into an area’s ground-water supply, sickening hundreds or thousands of residents through toxic exposure. The Acreage case is still unfolding and officials have neither identified nor ruled out any possible causes of the apparent contamination.
Parents of the latest kids to be diagnosed in the growing cancer tumor epidemic say they are frightened and not sure what to do next, UPI reports. One of the new cases involves a 15-year-old girl and the other is a 13-year-old girl who reportedly used to live in The Acreage but has since moved away.
