Shelled Hazelnuts Recalled; May Be Tainted By Salmonella, FDA Warns
More than 114,000 pounds of shelled hazelnuts processed by Willamette Shelling of Newberg, Oregon have been recalled because the nuts may be contaminated with salmonella, a form of bacteria associated with potentially deadly food poisoning.
Routine testing of the nuts found salmonella in one lot of the hazelnuts, officials said. The company has decided to recall all shelled hazelnuts processed at its facility between October 12 and November 25, 2009, the Food and Drug Administration and company officials said. No illnesses have been reported.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause severe infections in some people, especially frail or elderly people, young children, or those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include fever, diarrhea which may be bloody, vomiting, nausea, and abdominal pain, the FDA said. In the most severe cases, salmonella can reach the bloodstream and result in severe arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
The recalled hazelnuts were shelled at Willamette Shelling’s facility on behalf of hazelnut processors. Shelled Hazelnuts processed by Willamette Shelling were returned to Oregon processors and a Canadian processor, who sold the nuts under their own brand names. Unshelled hazelnuts are not affected by this recall, the FDA said.
The hazelnuts included in the recall were packed in 25-lbs. and-50 lbs. corrugated boxes with lot code numbers 296091A, 299091A, 300091A, VH3696BO, and 310091A. Those corrugated boxes bore the following brand names: Kunze Farms, Evonuk Oregon Hazelnuts, Canadian Hazelnuts, and Firestone Farms, the FDA said.
Hazelnut processors who used Willamette Shelling’s facility in 2009 are urged to return the product to Willamette Shelling.
