Pet Carousel Pig Ears, Beef Hoof Pet Treats Recalled Over Salmonella

Pet Carousel brand pig ears and beef hoof treats for pets have been recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella, a form of foodborne bacteria that is a leading cause of food poisoning.

Routine testing of the products by the Food and Drug Administration turned up salmonella in the pig ears and beef hoof products, the company and FDA announced today.

Salmonella can result in life-threatening infections in animals as well as humans. Pet owners who handle the contaminated pet treats may become infected, especially if they do not thoroughly wash their hands after coming into contact with the tainted treats, the FDA said.

In people, salmonella infections often result in mild to moderate symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea which may be bloody, abdominal cramping, and fever. In some rare cases, salmonella can result in fatal complications, such as arterial infections, inflammation of the lining of the heart (endocarditis), arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract infections.

In pets, salmonella infections may become lethargic and suffer from diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain, the FDA said.

The recalled pet treats were sold nationwide in both bulk and retail packaging for sale in pet food and retail chain stores throughout the country. All sizes and lots of these pork ears purchased on or after Aug. 16, 2009 and all beef hoof products in all varieties purchased on or after Sept. 16, 2009 made by Pet Carousel are included in the recall, officials said.
