Patio Fireplaces Recalled; Exterior Paint May Catch Fire, CPSC Warns
Vintage verandah patio fireplaces made by W.S. Badcock Corp. are being recalled because a paint used to finish the exterior shell may catch fire and pose a risk of burns to consumers.
About 1,250 of the outdoor fireplaces are involved in today’s recall. There has been one report of the exterior shell catching fire, although no injuries have been reported, the CPSC recall notice states.
Outdoor fireplaces containing flammable paint or other defects can result in devastating burn injuries to users and extensive property damage from out-of-control flames. The recalled products are popular with apartment dwellers and others who want to enjoy a crackling fire in small or outdoor spaces, where flames can quickly get out of control.
The recalled patio fireplaces are made of black metal with wire mesh sides, a black metal cap and chimney, and a metal grate with two accessory tools. They were sold at Badcock Home Furniture & More and Badcock Home Furnishings Center stores from September 2008 to November 2009 for about $300. The fireplaces were manufactured in China.
Consumers who have the recalled vintage verandah patio fireplaces in their possession should stop using the fireplaces immediately and return them to their local Badcock store or place of purchase, the CPSC said.
