Loss of Steering Control Risk Cited in Recall of Polaris ATVs

About 8,500 model year 2009 and 2010 Polaris all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have been recalled because a manufacturing defect can cause the vehicle to go out of control, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Polaris Industries Inc. of Medina, Minn. has received 19 reports in which riders lost the ability to steer the recalled ATVs. No injuries have been reported, the CPSC recall notice said. Yamaha Rhino ATVs are among the other brands of four-wheelers which have been recalled due to various dangerous defects blamed for causing rider injuries and deaths.

Earlier this month, about 2,400 model year 2010 Can-Am ATVs were recalled because the dynamic power steering could fail, causing the rider to suddenly lose control and posing a risk of injury and death to riders, the CPSC said.

Defective Suspension Joint Blamed

The problems with the Polaris ATVs are occurring because the front suspension ball joint stem may separate from the steering knuckle, resulting in a loss in steering control and posing a risk of injury or death to riders, officials said.

Today’s recall involves various model year 2009 and 2010 Polaris Sportsman ATVs, which are listed below:

Model Year      Model Name

2009                       Sportsman XP 550

2009                       Sportsman XP 550 EPS

2010                       Sportsman 550

2010                       Sportsman X2 550

2010                       Sportsman Touring 550

2009/2010           Sportsman XP 850

2009/2010           Sportsman XP850 EPS

2010                       Sportsman Touring 850

The recalled ATVs were manufactured between January and August 2009. The VIN number and manufacture date are located on the right front of the ATV on the frame rail next to the front shock. The ATVs were manufactured in the United States and sold at Polaris dealers nationwide from February 2009 through November 2009 for between $7,500 and $10,800, the CPSC said.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ATVs and contact their local Polaris dealer to determine if your model and VIN number are included in this recall and to schedule a free repair. Polaris is directly contacting registered owners about the recall, the CPSC said.
