JCPenney Outdoor BBQ Grills Recalled Due to Burn Hazard

About 5,500 Cooks Outdoor brand barbecue grills sold by JCPenney are being recalled because the drip pan on the grills does not adequately drain, posing a risk of out-of-control flames and burns to users.

The company has received 11 reports of fires on the grills caused by inadequate drainage, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said. There have been no reports of injuries in those incidents, officials said.

The recall involves only Cooks Outdoor brand outdoor grills with a digital thermometer on the hood, stainless steel top, and a global LP regulator. The lot number 780-2176 is printed on the underside of the grill’s stand.

The recalled grills were sold exclusively at JCPenney stores nationwide and online at www.jcp.com from February 2009 through September 2009 for between $190 and $600. They were manufactured in China.

Defective Grills Linked to Burn Injuries

Defective household appliances, including barbecue grills, are often blamed for serious injuries to users. Blenders can inflict serious cuts and other injuries to fingers and hands, while using toasters and other electrical appliances can result in severe burns and fires causing damage to homes.

In many cases, companies that manufacture household appliances are negligent for failing to properly design the products or test them for risks of injury. Companies may be financially liable to injured consumers for the costs of their medical bills and other damages caused by their defective products.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Cooks Outdoor grills, the CPSC said. Also, consumers should remove the gas regulator and hose assembly to ensure the defective grills are not in usable condition.

All consumers, regardless of where they purchased their grills, should return the regulator and hose to the Catalog/Customer Service Desk at any JCPenney store for a full refund. Consumers should contact JCPenney for instructions on how to disconnect the gas regulator and hose, the CPSC said.
