Infant Car Seat/Carriers Recalled Due to Fall Hazard

About 447,000 Dorel infant car seat/carriers are being recalled today because the handle on the child restraints may loosen and fall off, posing a risk of falls and injury to infants riding in the seats, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Dorel Juvenile Group Inc. of Columbus, Ind. has received 77 reports of the child restraint handles falling either partially or completely off, resulting in three injuries to infants who fell. The injuries have included a head injury, bumps, and bruises, the CPSC recall notice states.

Defective products, including infant car seats and carriers, are a leading cause of injury and death among children in the United States. Thousands of children suffer serious injury each year because of faulty toys, cribs and play pens, and other types of products designed for children.

Specific Models Recalled

The recall includes nearly 40 models of car seat/carriers carrying the brand names Safety 1st, Cosco, Eddie Bauer, and Disney. For a complete listing of the recalled models and product descriptions, see the CPSC recall notice. The model number and manufacture date are located on a label on the side of the car seat/carrier, the agency said.

The recalled infant seat/carriers were manufactured in China from January 6, 2008 through April 6, 2009. They were sold as part of travel systems including a stroller, but the stroller portion of the travel system is not affected by this recall, officials said.

The products were sold at department and juvenile product stores nationwide from January 2008 through December 2009 for between $120 and $220.

Consumers who have the recalled infant car seat/carriers in their possession should not use the handle of the car seat/carrier until a free repair kit provided by Dorel has been installed. However, the product can continue to be safely used as a car seat when properly installed in the vehicle.
