CPSC Recalls

IKEA Highchairs Recalled After Reports of Falls, Injuries, Choking Hazard

About 600 futuristic-looking highchairs sold at IKEA stores are being recalled following reports of the snap locks on the products failing, including one incident in which a child fell through the frame and suffered bruised legs.

The Leopard highchairs have locks designed to secure the seat, but they can fail and allow the child to fall. The snap locks may also detach from the high chair, posing a choking hazard to young children, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission which issued a voluntary recall of the products.

IKEA Home Furnishings has received 11 reports worldwide of faulty snap locks on the highchairs. One report involved a child putting a detached snap lock in his or her mouth and another involved a child falling through the frame when the lock failed and allowed the seat to detach from the highchair.

None of the incidents or injuries has occurred in the United States, the CPSC said.

The recall involves all colors of the LEOPARD highchairs sold as a seat and a frame individually. The seat and tray has an adhesive label affixed to the underside with the words LEOPARD and “Made in Italy,” an eight-digit article number and a five-digit supplier number (19589). To see a picture of the highchairs that look like something the Jetsons would have used for their kids, see the CPSC recall notice here. (On the bright side, the chairs don’t appear to be one of the IKEA products you need an engineering degree and eight free hours to assemble).

The recalled highchairs were sold only IKEA stores nationwide from October 2009 through November 2009 for about $60. The frame sold for $40 and the seat for $20.

Consumers who have the recalled Leopard highchairs in their homes should immediately stop using the highchairs and return them to any IKEA store for a full refund, the CPSC said.
