Faulty Haier America Blenders Recalled Due to Injury Risks

More than 53,000 kitchen blenders marketed by Haier America Trading are being recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission because the blade assemblies in the products can come apart or break, posing a risk of cuts and other injuries to users.

The New York-based importer said it has received about 60 reports of blade assemblies breaking, including one report of a user suffering a cut to his hand, according to the CPSC recall notice.

Each year across the United States, thousands of people are killed or injured in accidents involving blenders and other types of household appliances. Cuts, burns, and property damage may be blamed on defectively designed or built household appliances.

One Blender Model Recalled

The recall involves commercial-style 500-watt blenders with model number HB500BSS, officials said. They were available in black plastic and stainless steel and have “Haier” printed on the front below the power switch. The model number is printed on a label stuck to the bottom of the blenders.

To see a color photo of the recalled blenders, see the CPSC recall notice.

The recalled blenders were manufactured in China and sold at mass merchandisers and specialty retailers nationwide from November 2006 through October 2009 for between $26 and $60, the CPSC said.

Consumers who have a recalled Haier blender in their possession should immediately stop using the recalled appliances and contact Haier America to receive a free replacement blade assembly, according to the CPSC.
