Calif. Boy Strangled by Play Set Jump Rope

A Southern California boy is fighting for his life today after being severely injured when a jump rope that was attached to a backyard play set became wrapped around his neck, strangling him.

Jeremy Freidrich, 4, was injured last month while playing which his older sister, Emily, 6, outside their family’s home in the Los Angeles suburb of Fullerton, according to a report in the Orange County Register.

When Jeremy’s father found him, the boy was not breathing and his heart had stopped beating, according to the newspaper. The boy remains hospitalized in a coma at an Orange County children’s hospital and is only able to breathe on his own for short periods of time.

Jeremy’s father had been supervising the children at play when he stepped inside the house “for a minute” before returning to find his son with the play set jump rope wrapped around his neck, the paper said.

There is no word on what brand of play set was involved in the tragedy. However, Jeremy’s injury highlights the inherent dangers in such children’s products.

Playground Accidents: A Leading Cause of Children’s Injuries

Each year across the United States, thousands of children are injured or killed in accidents involving toys and playground equipment. Broken bones, head and spinal cord injuries, and other serious injuries may be caused in slips and falls from playground equipment.

In many cases, play sets and other types of playground equipment are defectively designed, manufactured, assembled, or maintained, allowing tragic accidents to occur. In other cases, negligent failure by school officials, day care center operators, and other responsible parties to properly supervise children at play leads to deadly and serious injuries in children.
