All Slim-Fast Shakes Recalled Due to Possible Bacterial Contamination
All flavors of Slim-Fast ready-to-drink shakes sold across the United States and in Canada — an estimated 10 million cans — are being recalled today because the beverages may be contaminated with bacteria that can result in serious health complications, the Food and Drug Administration said.
Routine testing of the cans turned up Bacillus cereus, a micro-organism which may cause diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, the FDA said. Still, the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences from consuming contaminated Slim-Fast shakes is “remote,” the FDA said.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the company is recalling all (ready-to-drink) products in cans that are currently in distribution centers, on-shelf or in back rooms in retail outlets or in consumers’ homes,” the FDA recall notice states. “The company is in the process of identifying and correcting the production issue, and will resume production and shipment of the product when the issue has been addressed and corrected.”
All Cans, All Flavors Recalled
The sweeping recall applies to all Slim-Fast ready-to-drink products in cans, regardless of flavor, lot code, UPC code, or “Best By” date, the FDA said. The recalled Slim-Fast shakes are packaged in paperboard cartons and contain four, six, or 12 cans containing 11 fluid ounces each. Individual cans also are sold in some retail outlets, the FDA said.
No other Slim-Fast products, such as powdered shakes, meal bars, or snack bars, are affected by the recall, the FDA said.
Consumers who have the recalled meal-replacement beverages in their possession are urged to throw them out and not to drink them due to the fears of contaminated with the illness-causing bacteria.
