Choking Hazard Prompts Recall of Simon & Schuster Children’s Plush Books
About 142,000 Monday the Bullfrog Plush Books have been recalled because a plastic eye on the frog of the children’s books can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
Simon & Schuster Inc., the publisher of the children’s books, has received reports of three plastic eyes detaching after use and one book that was packaged with a detached eye, the CPSC said. There have been no reports of injuries caused by the defective books.
Defective toys and other consumer products intended for children are blamed for thousands of injuries and deaths in the United States each year. Small parts can break off from toys or books such as the Monday the Bullfrog Plush Books and pose a choking risk to children or contain lead, which can poison children and cause cancer, neurological problems, and other serious health complications.
Monday the Bullfrog is a plush puppet bullfrog with a board book attached to the frog’s mouth. It was sold in clear plastic packaging and marked with ISBN numbers 10: 1416912312 and 13: 9781416912316 printed inside the mouth of the bullfrog, the CPSC recall notice said.
The recalled books were sold at bookstores and retailers nationwide and online from January 2006 through November 2009 for about $18. They were manufactured in China.
Consumers should immediately place the product out of a child’s reach and contact Simon & Schuster for a free replacement book, the CPSC said.
