You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out! Top 10 Most Dangerous Toys List Released
Santa Claus may be making his list of who’s been naughty and who’s been nice, but he may want to check out this list, too.
Consumer watchdog group World Against Toys Causing Harm (W.A.T.C.H.) just released its list of the 10 “worst toys,” just in time for the hectic holiday shopping season. This year’s list includes toys for both boys and girls that carry risks of eye injuries, choking, and strangulation, officials said.
“A lot of the same hazards we see, year after year, are still appearing on the shelves,” said James Swartz, an attorney and director of the group that has produced the list each year since 1972, according to a Reuters and MSNBC.com news report.
Top 10 ‘Worst Toys’
The list of the most dangerous toys includes the following products, in no particular order:
• Disney-Pixar Wall-E Foam Rocket Launcher by Disney/Hoop Retail Stores, LLC
• Moon Board Pogo Board by Big Time Toys, LLC
• Curious Baby, Curious George Counting – My First Book of Numbers by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Brace Publishing Co.
• The Dark Knight Batman Figure by Mattel
• X-Men Origins Slashin’ Action Wolverine by Hasbro
• Lots to Love Babies “Mini Nursery” by JC Toys Group, Inc.
• Just Kids Junior Musical Instruments by Kmart Corp.
• CAT Rugged remote-controlled dump truck by Toy State International Limited
• Pucci Pups Maltese stuffed animal by Battat, Inc.
• Spy Gear Viper Blaster by Wild Planet Entertainment, Inc.
The toys were sold nationwide at leading retailers, including Toys “R” Us and Kmart, officials said. In the past, W.A.T.C.H. has been successful in getting a number of dangerous toys pulled from the shelves. Some of the toys on the list are dangerous because they are indicated for infants and young children who may choke on small pieces on the toys or otherwise be injured during play.
Dangerous Toys: A Cause of Child Death and Injury
There were at least 19 toy-related deaths in the United States in 2008, according to the Consumer Products Safety Commission. During the same time, there were about 235,300 toy-related injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms.
