Thousands of Play Sets Recalled Over Rotting Wood and Injuries

About 282,000 Adventure play sets sold in the United States and Canada are being recalled after more than a thousand reports of the wood supports rotting and weakening over time, causing falls resulting in broken bones, cuts, and scrapes to children.

Adventure Playsets of Amarillo, Texas and the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall today. About 275,000 play sets sold in the U.S. and another 6,800 sold in Canada are included in the safety recall.

There have been more than 1,400 reports of rotting ladders causing 16 injuries, including nine emergency room visits, officials said. Injuries linked to falls from the broken wooden play sets have included arm fractures, cuts, scrapes, and bruises to children age 8 and under.

Plastic coated lumber on the horizontal ladder of the play sets is made of whitewood, such as fir, pine, and spurce, that can rot and become weak. Most of the injuries have occurred when the swing came out of the monkey bar/swing beam that has become rotten, the CPSC said.

The recall involves 11 models of Adventure brand wooden play sets with swings, slides and ladders. Each set has an overhead monkey bar ladder that acts as both the monkey bar and swing beam, and an end ladder coated with cranberry or green plastic. The instruction manual has the name “Adventure Playsets” and a model numbers printed on the cover, the CPSC said.

The Bellevue, Tacoma, and Durango model swing sets were previously recalled due to detaching frames and a fall hazard.

The recalled play sets were sold at Walmart, Toys R Us, Academy Sports, Menards, and Mill stores nationwide, online at Walmart.com, ToyRUs.com, Willygoat.com, and through the DMSI catalog from January 2004 through December 2007 for between $300 and $600. They were manufactured in the United States.

Consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled swing sets and contact Adventure Play sets to receive a replacement kit.
