Salon Owner Convicted of Injecting Patients With Fake Botox and Restylane
A Washington cosmetologist and beauty salon owner has been convicted of injecting patients with unknown substances she claimed were the cosmetic products Botox and Restylane.
Xin He, 46, of Issaquah, Wash., was found guilty on felony and misdemeanor counts of misbranding drugs for sale and delivery of adulterated devices following a trial held in federal court in Seattle. She faces up to three years in prison and a $10,000 fine when she is sentenced December 18, federal prosecutors said.
He claimed in ads she placed in Vietnamese newspapers to be licensed to offer cosmetic surgery procedures, including injections of Botox and Restylane. Dating back as far as 2004, He injected an unknown substance she claimed was Restylane into the face of a female patient.
Patients Reports Complications Following Injections
The patient’s face became inflamed, forcing her to seek out medical treatment from a dermatologist. It was later determined the material injected into the patient’s face was not genuine Restylane, prosecutors said. He, a licensed esthetician and manicurist but not a licensed medical doctor, also was accused of injecting counterfeit Botox into clients in her beauty salon.
Despite orders from state health department officials to stop injecting patients with counterfeit cosmetic products, He continued to do so until April 2008. Another victim came forward to say injections by He had become hard and swollen under her skin.
