Nokia Recalls 14 Million Phone Chargers Over Shock Risks

About 14 million Nokia mobile phone chargers are being recalled and the company is offering free replacement chargers to users because the products may be defective and deliver electrical shocks.

A loose plastic cover on the chargers may expose the internal components and pose a risk of electrical shock if the wiring is accidentally touched, officials said. The recalled chargers were made by a third-party manufacturer in China, not by Nokia, and are compatible with several models of Nokia phones.

Several Phone Chargers Recalled

Phone charger models AC-3E, AC-3U, and AC-4U are involved in today’s recall. The AC-3E and AC-3U models were manufactured between June 15, 2009 and August 9, 2009. The AC-4U model was manufactured between April 13, 2009 and October 25, 2009, Nokia said.

The phone chargers were mostly distributed through Europe, Latin America, and North America.

There have been no reports of incidents or injuries related to use of the defective phone chargers, officials said. However, because of the risk of serious injuries, Nokia is advising consumers not to use the recalled mobile phone chargers.

Website Set Up for Free Exchange

Owners of Nokia phones may be wondering whether their phone charger is among those being recalled and what to do next. Nokia has set up an Internet site, chargerexchange.nokia.com, so consumers can see if their chargers are eligible for exchange and how to get a free replacement.
