Jelly Belly Packages Recalled for Peanut Allergy Risk

Some packages of Jelly Belly candies are being recalled because the labeling does not list peanut butter and peanut flower as ingredients, posing a risk of serious allergic reactions and injury to consumers with peanut allergies.

Jelly Belly Candy Company is recalling 7.5-ounce cylinder-style packages of 49 Flavors Jelly Belly jelly beans. The candies were sold in cylinder packages in about 200 independent stores nationwide from September 29 to October 30, 2009, officials said.

The recalled products are clear 7.5-ounce acetate cylinders with a white label on the bottom listing the lot codes 090925, 090928, 090929, or 091001 and UPC code 071567989398, the Food and Drug Administration recall notice said.

Jelly Belly recently noticed the incorrect ingredient statement was on the cylinders of jelly beans, prompting the recall. There have been no reports of illnesses or allergic reactions linked to the recalled candies, officials said.

No other Jelly Belly packaged candies are part of today’s recall and consumers who are not allergic to peanuts are not at risk of adverse health reactions from eating the recalled jelly beans, officials said.
