Feared Listeria Contamination Prompts Smoked Salmon Recall

The potential for contamination by Listeria monocytogenes bacteria has forced the recall of some packages of Brooklyn’s Best brand Smoked Nova Salmon, the Food and Drug Administration said.

The recalled salmon packages were manufactured by Service Smoked Fish Corp. of Brooklyn, N.Y. and sold in retail stores in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Portland, Oregon, according to the FDA recall notice.

There is no word on how many packages are included in the recall.

Bacteria Linked to Potential for Severe Health Complications

No illnesses have been reported so far in connection with the tainted salmon, health officials said, but Listeria is a leading cause of potentially fatal food poisoning in the United States.

People infected with Listeria may develop short-term symptoms including high fever, severe headache, muscle stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea which may be bloody. Pregnant women who are infected may suffer miscarriages or stillbirths. The elderly or frail, young children, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to fatal and complications from Listeria poisoning.

Specific Lots Included in Recall

Only packages of Brooklyn’s Best salmon carrying specific “Use-By” dates and lot codes are included in the recall. The Smoked Nova Salmon was vacuum-packed in clear, plastic bags of various size packages including 3 oz., 4 oz., 8 oz., 12 oz., 16 oz. and random weight sides. The brand name “Brooklyn’s BEST” appears on a circular label inside the vacuum bag.

Packages with “Use-By” dates of 12/03/09 through 12/19/09 are being recalled.  Also, air-packed in bulk boxes with lot numbers 060 through 043 are being recalled.  No other use-by dates or lots numbers are involved in this recall.

The “Use-By” date appears on the bottom of the gold board, the FDA said.

FDA Testing Detected Contamination

The recall was announced after routine FDA testing of samples pulled from the affected lots of salmon detected Listeria bacteria. The company has stopped production and distribution of the food as the investigation into the source of the contamination continues, the FDA said.

Consumers who have purchased the above “Use-By” dates or lot codes of Brooklyn’s Best smoked Nova salmon should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.  Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-388-4067, Monday – Friday, 7 am – 3 pm., the FDA said.
