Bodybuilding.com Dietary Supplements Recalled for Containing Steroids

Dozens of muscle-building dietary supplements sold by Bodybuilding.com have been recalled because they are suspected of containing ingredients that either are steroids or should be categorized as steroids, which can result in acute liver injury, the Food and Drug Administration said.

All lots and expiration dates of 65 dietary supplements sold by the company through its website are included in the international recall. For a complete list of the recalled brand names, see the FDA’s recall notice.

The company has not received any reports of injuries to users of the dietary supplements, but the potential for harm from liver damage caused by use of steroids is so great that a massive product recall is warranted, the FDA said.

Suspected Steroid Ingredients Prompt Recall

The recalled dietary supplements are suspected of containing Superdrol, Madol, Tren, Androstenedione, and Turinabol, which are chemicals either currently classified as steroids by the FDA or which the agency thinks should be classified as steroids.

“While the company has not had an opportunity to independently confirm the FDA’s concerns that the recalled products in fact contain these ingredients, the company is undertaking this voluntary recall in an abundance of caution,” the FDA said.

Steroid Use Linked to Serious Complications

Steroid use can result in severe, long-term adverse health complications in men and women. Men taking the products may experience shrinking of the testes, breast enlargement, and infertility, while women on steroids may develop masculine features in women. Steroids also have been associated with shortness of stature in children and higher risks of drug and alcohol abuse, heart attack, stroke, and death, the FDA said.

Customers who have any of the recalled Bodybuilding.com dietary supplements in their possession should stop using them immediately and contact their physician if they have experienced any problems that may be related to taking one or more of the steroid ingredients, the FDA said.
