Strangulation Risks Prompt Recall of Nearly 1 Million Window Shades, Blinds

Almost one million roman shades and roller blinds are being recalled because the window coverings can pose a risk of strangulation to young children, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

The recent near strangulation of a Delaware toddler who became tangled in the strings of a Roman shade prompted the massive recall, which comes on the heels of another recent recall involving about 5.4 million other shades.

Today’s recall includes:

• About 90,000 Faux Suede Roman Shades from Hanover Direct Inc.

• About 364,000 Dublin Energy Solution Roman Shades from Louis Hornick & Co. Inc.

• About 533,000 ISDANS, TUPPLUR, and ENJE Roller Blinds from IKEA Home Furnishings

Strangulations may occur when a child places his neck between the exposed strings and cords on the shades or pulls the cord out and wraps it around his neck, the CPSC warned.

Recalled Shades Sold at Various Stores

The recalled Faux Suede room-darkening Roman shades are style number 12810A. They were available in Ivory, Taupe, Gold, Plum, Wine Red, Midnight Blue, Moss Green and Dark Brown and have a head rail that measures 23, 27, 31, 35, 39 43 or 48 inches. The shades have a sticker on the head rail with the letters “WS” and “style 12810A” is printed on the packaging box, the CPSC said.

The shades were sold at Hanover Direct/Domestications on the Internet at www.domestications.com and through catalog sales nationwide from January 2004 through December 2008 for between $20 and $40, according to the CPSC recall notice.

The Dublin Energy Solution Roman Shades being recalled were sold at Bed Bath & Beyond stores nationwide and on-line at www.bedbathandbeyond.com from August 2007 through September 2009 for between $40 and $130, the CPSC recall notice states. All sizes and colors of Dublin Energy Solution Roman Shades sold by Bed Bath & Beyond with exposed inner cords on the back are included in the recall.

Two children have reportedly becoming entangled in the exposed inner cord on the back of the shade, officials said. No serious injuries have resulted.

The recalled IKEA blinds are made of a solid or sheer fabric, measuring 24” to 79” wide, and have a metal top rail and a bead chain, the CPSC said. They were sold at IKEA stores nationwide from July 2005 through July 2009 for between $10 and $55, the CPSC recall notice said.
