Quantum Office Chairs Recalled; Backs May Loosen and Cause Users to Fall

About 150,000 Quantum Realspace PRO 900 series office chairs sold at Office Depot stores are being recalled after reports of users falling and being injured when bolts on the chair backs came loose.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall of the Quantum Realspace PRO™ 9000 Series Mid-Back Multifunction Mesh Chair and Multifunction Mesh Chair with Headrest.

User Injuries Reported

Importer Raynor Marketing has received 33 reports of the seatbacks on the chairs coming loose and detaching, including 14 involving bumps, bruises, and other injuries, the CPSC said.

The falls occurred when bolts holding the seatback to the chair frame came loose and came off, officials said.

Quantum Realspace PRO™ 9000 Series Mid-Back Multifunction Mesh Chairs with SKU # 510830 and the Quantum Realspace PRO™ 9000 Series Mesh Chair with Headrest carrying SKU # 690690 are included in today’s recall. The Realspace PRO™ Mesh Guest Chair is not involved in this recall, the CPSC said.

Sold at Office Depot Stores and on Internet

The chairs were made in China and sold exclusively at Office Depot stores nationwide and on www.OfficeDepot.com from May 2006 through August 2009. The mid-back chairs sold for about $300 and the chair with headrest for about $350, according to the CPSC recall notice.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled office chairs and contact Raynor to receive a free repair kit, the CPSC said.
