More Electra Bikes Recalled Due to Defective Baskets, Trays
An additional 6,400 Electra bicycles are being recalled because the baskets and trays on the front of the bikes can come loose, causing a risk of falls to riders, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
About 3,000 of the bikes were recalled in March after more than a dozen reports of the front tray or basket on the bikes coming loose, including two incidents involving falls causing cuts and bruises. That earlier recall is now being expanded to include more bikes, according to the CPSC recall notice.
Bicycle accidents are an increasing cause of personal injury in the United States. Thousands of people are injured or killed each year in accidents caused by defective bicycles.
A new study released today by researchers at the University of Colorado, Boulder finds that bicycle injuries in U.S. have become more severe, with a steep increase in the number of chest and stomach injuries caused in such accidents.
2009 Models Recalled
The expanded recall covers some 2009 models of Electra bicycles made by Electra Bicycle Co. of Vista, Ca. The 2009 Delivery 3i, Delivery 8D, Holiday 3i, Holiday 8i and Surf 3i bicycles with front-mounted trays or baskets are included in the recall.
The trays have a flat alloy frame with wooden slats and the baskets are wicker with a removable tote bag. The trays were sold as original equipment on the bikes, but the baskets were sold only as after-market accessories, the CPSC said.
The recalled bikes were sold at authorized Electra Bicycle dealers nationwide from October 2008 through August 2009 for between $600 and $750 for the bicycles and about $100 for aftermarket trays and baskets. The bicycles were manufactured in Taiwan, the CPSC said.
Consumers should immediately stop riding these bicycles and contact an Electra Bicycle dealer for a free inspection and repair of the trays that came as original equipment on the bicycles, or a refund for trays and baskets purchased as aftermarket items, according to the CPSC.
